k-w & area bridal news: march 2004 edition
march agenda
Welcome Wagon
Bridal Show:
Mon., Mar. 8
We are loving the Welcome Wagon Bridal Show this March because one of our favourite decorators, Now & Always Wedding Decorating, is decking the halls, entranceway, stage, and of course her own booth. This is a great chance to get a taste of Cindy Koebel's style and see what she can do to make a room fantastic. Aside from all of this, more bridal shows mean more ideas and more options. It's all good!
When: Monday March 8, 2004 (only days away!), Doors Open @ 6:30pm
Where: Kitchener City Hall
(200 King St. W)
Cost: FREE
How: Call Marnie @ 894-2676 to register

Wedding101 Workshop
We know that a lot of brides missed the workshop (casual chat, really!) that ran at the Cambridge wedding show. We've been getting emails ever since! In light of this, the ring is putting together a list of brides interested in attending a March or April workshop. If there are enough names, we'll look at holding one in a few weeks. The workshop will be in Bridal Shower style. There may be a $10-15 fee/bride (grooms free, if you can drag them kicking and screaming....) for attendance so that we have munchies and a space to hold the session in. If you're interested in hand-outs, prizes, tons of tips, fun stuff to do and a free-chat Q&A session where you can ask anything you want of the staff and wedding planner present at the workshop!

March's Favourite Romantic/Strange Wedding Proposal My fiancé, Kevin, and I had been together for three years when he proposed. It was December 17, 2002, and we were going out for dinner to celebrate. He suggested that we leave a few minutes early to take our time and look at the Christmas lights on the way. We drove down the street from my house, and he stopped the car part way down. I live down the street from a beautiful spot on the Grand River, where there are some old mill ruins and a view of the Pioneer Tower. This is where he stopped, and suggested we go look at the water at night. Well, I was in a skirt, and it was the middle of winter, and the mill is NOT lit nor is any path shoveled. So it goes without saying that I was not amused at this idea... He finally convinced me to get out of the car and walk down to the water. Once there, the old mill lit up with white Christmas lights - I was totally shocked. He then got down on his knee in the snow and proposed. It was incredibly romantic. The day before he had gotten a couple friends together and set up all the lights. His friend was hiding on the neighbour's porch and turned the lights on at the precise moment. We then went out for dinner, but I couldn't eat anything, I was so excited. We're getting married on June 12 of this year in our church - the place we met. :) [click to read more]

Planning Session 1 for Catrina & Greg...
February 18/04 @ Kelsey's with Catrina & Greg (Bride & Groom) and Jennifer (The Wedding Ring)

Catrina and Greg chose a personal wedding coordinator to work in conjunction with them and theweddingring.ca to plan this mega wedding event of 160 guests that Catrina and Greg envision. We all decided to meet at Kelsey's to chat about anything and everything to do with their wedding. Their planner brought a ton of questions, ideas, and research notes he'd been making from what he already knew they'd been looking for, Catrina brought a surprising amount of internet research that she has been printing out and storing in her Wedding Planning Portfolio (from The Wedding Timer), and Jennifer brought her pen and paper to take notes!

The biggest topics of the day was finding reception and ceremony locations...
Catrina and Greg want a large hotel ballroom atmosphere. They have a big guest list, they want beautiful decorations, and they need a location that will suit this. There are a few options on the table, such as The Waterloo Inn, The Four Points Sheraton, The Croation Hall, and a few others... Next step? Their planner books a week solid of visiting and quizzing reception halls on availability, rates, details and options, all so that he can report back to Catrina & Greg with results in one week's time.

Catrina and Greg want their ceremony in a large beautiful church that will suit the size and formality of their wedding. Problem? Catrina and Greg aren't regular members at any church and Catrina isn't baptized. Solution: Find a big beautiful church that will allow non-members to marry there and take the required marriage classes (if necessary). Next step? Their planner calls about two dozen churches to get all the information needed to find an amazing church location for his Bride and Groom. stay tuned for more...

Planning Session 1 for Erika & Gary...
Feb 28, 2004 @ Gary's Parents' Home with Erika and Gary (Bride & Groom), and Jennifer (The Wedding Ring)

Erika and Gary are using referrals and planning tips from theweddingring.ca to create their dream wedding day. Session one was at Erika and Gary's home, where they stay with their parents as their house is being built. They'll be moving into their new home in August, only months before the wedding.

As the meeting got started, Gary was laying back in his Lazy Boy, trying not to move very much. He'd hurt his leg playing basketball until 4am for Erika's high school fundraiser (both Erika and Gary are teachers) the night before. Both Erika & Gary are young and peppy and are equally involved in every step of the wedding planning.

Topics of the day? Because Erika & Gary have already reserved their reception hall and church, it was all about details. This day was about limos vs. five rental VW Bugs for each couple in the wedding party, wedding cakes vs. cupcakes, guest hotel rooms, a killer honeymoon suite, finding a great location for a sunday brunch with the family, and, of course, flowers. stay tuned for more...

Planning Session 1 for Kendra & Ryan...
March 3, 2004 @ Jennifer's Home with Kendra (Bride - groom was at work) and Jennifer (The Wedding Ring)

Kendra met with Jennifer at her home after Kendra finished work as a marketing and communications associate for the City of Kitchener. The topics on the table were EVERYTHING. She has booked her reception at an upscale downtown reception hall, but because her wedding is not until February, 2005, Kendra and Ryan still need everything else, including a church. Jennifer and Kendra went over every possible idea for transportation, photographs, flowers, invitations, churches, spa packages... The first meeting brought together a rough first draft of the wedding budget that went approximately $1500 over. Next step? Jennifer spends a week on the phone shopping for the best options, best people, and the best prices she can get. stay tuned for more...

the justified splurge: the honeymoon suite
In search of a luxury honeymoon suite that would romance the socks off of even the most exhausted Bride & Groom, we landed at the Best Western St. Jacobs Country Inn. When you've spent thousands of dollars on your wedding, you've entertained and smiled for hundreds of people for about eight hours, and you've said Good-bye to all of your 160 closest friends and family, it's time to relax, and get romantic with your sweetie. How does this sound?... A fireplace, whirlpool tub for two, champagne, strawberries or chocolates, breakfast served to the room, and of course... a late check-out... Click for more

from 'English Garden' to 'Renaissance' Décor, Ayr decorator sets the scene for weddings
Before we arrived at the Now & Always showroom, Cindy Koebel had lit dozens of candles and lanterns, had all of her twinkle lights sparkling throughout the room, and her portfolio was arranged to showcase a large collection of work examples. Cindy does this for every client because it introduces them to the Now & Always style of decorating. It also hints at what's to come for the bride and groom, should they hire Cindy to create a mood for their reception. What all of this really said to us, though, was that Cindy cares about presentation and about details

Dear Brides, Grooms and our Not-So-Little K-W Wedding Community,

When I started this newsletter two days ago it was fourteen degrees outside, my kids were playing on the swing set in the backyard and I had spring flowers all over the layout of this issue. Today, as I wrap things up and get ready to send the newsletter off to hundreds of our K-W brides, it is snowing. Not just a little. I'm talking about big, puffy, Christmas-like snowflakes. My kids are now asking to build a snowman.

So, in light of this, I ask our bridal community not to despair. Spring is just around the corner, which means your weddings are likely to follow not far behind.

With thousands of brides visiting each month, and dozens of new reviews added, I ask you to check out the ring, the reviews, the growing chat forums, and put us to use!

From reality weddings to do-it-yourself Stag & Doe sound systems and killer honeymoon suites, this issue is intended to give you a few dozen more awesome ideas for your weddings and is our best yet.

The Ring has just saved you about four months worth of work. :)

See you in The Ring!
